About Communicare

Communicare is a South Carolina non-profit organization which coordinates a network of physicians, health care providers and pharmaceutical companies who donate services and prescriptions to qualified working uninsured citizens. Communicare also manages school-based and volunteer dental programs to meet the needs of children in areas where access to oral health care is limited.

Mission

Because access to health care should be available to the working uninsured, Communicare is dedicated to:

• Serving the working uninsured with needed information, treatment, and essential medications.
• Providing children of limited-income families with quality oral health care services and education.

Public/Private Partnerships at Work

Communicare is recognized on a national level as a model of a public /private partnership. Communicare was created to bridge the gap between South Carolina's working uninsured and much-needed health care services putting health care in reach of those who do not qualify for government medical aid and cannot afford health insurance. Communicare leverages its state funding with significant support from the private sector, including support from local and national foundations, national pharmaceutical companies, corporate and individual donors, and patient application fees. In doing so, Communicare has made wellness an attainable goal for the state's working uninsured residents.

2005 Facts

Answering	... more than 120,000 calls for assistance from the working uninsured who do not qualify for Medicare, Medicaid or Veteran's health benefits.
Providing	... Communicare approved patients with access to physician care and prescription medications.
Serving	... more than 15,400 patients in all South Carolina Counties.
Partnering	... with a network of 2,500 volunteer physicians, eleven pharmaceutical companies, pharmacies, dentists, hospitals, schools, business and community donors.
Managing	... five pediatric dental centers for the 5,000 students from limited income families who would not otherwise have access to oral health care.
Dispensing	... approximately $27.7 million in donated prescription drugs through our William E. Murray central fill in-house pharmacy (average 1,000 per day).
